The Port of Holyhead provides berthing and handling facilities for a range of commercial operations. Accordingly, a variety of vessels regularly call at the port, these include regular scheduled passenger and vehicle ferries, cruise vessels, tankers, bulk vessels, fishing vessels and military support vessels.

Additionally a large recreational community use the sheltered harbour area with a dedicated marina hosting permanent moorings and berth facilities. The harbour has the ability to accommodate additional vessels at anchor although this is not common practice: anchoring within the fairway is prohibited and holding areas within some areas are poor.

A LPS (Local Port Services) station operates at Holyhead Port Control. This service provides 24 hour monitoring and marine safety co-ordination, covering the statutory Harbour Authority Area, Competent Pilotage Authority area and port approaches. Port Control has Radar coverage, AIS (Automatic Identification System) in operation across all Harbour Authority areas and is augmented with CCTV coverage of all approaches, berths and the TSS (Traffic Separation Scheme)

Stena Line Ports Ltd (SLPL) is the Statutory Harbour Authority, Competent Harbour Authority and Local Lighthouse Authority for the Port of Holyhead. SLPL’s powers and duties are derived primarily from the following legislation:
